Student Profile: Stuff about Josh

my majoradvice | campus lifewho I am | my spirituality

Choosing my area of study:

>In high school, my mom recommended I do something in Commerce. I have since changed my concentration (not the same thing as my major, but an area of focus within my major) from a accounting to management information systems.

>Being a commerce student, I really enjoyed the fun I have interacting with my classmates. We have this community effort in finishing assignments which is representative of how we would interact in the real world.

>On the flip side of all this people interaction, it wasn't always the easiest working with multiple-teams and managing team conflict.

>If you want to succeed in commerce, you need people skills and the ability to work in teams and as a team.

Josh's advice for students:

>Make friends who you can work with (and not just based on skill level!)

>Tinker with computers, networks, and the Internet... that is the best way to learn

>Prioritize your time because if you don't, you will run on other people's schedules and on their priorities.

>Don't afraid to approach profs about questions because often times they will give you inside info and help you to their best of their ability. A lot of profs like to roleplay and they represent your boss or supervisor. So if you don't ask outside class, you won't know some important things to complete an assignment or exam.

>Remember these two things that were the greatest lessons university has taught me:

1) A student with no goal/purpose will not achieve anything.
2) In a team project, delegate, delegate and delegate!

My Life in university:

>Tuition and the fees you have to pay is not fun!!! Crazy...

>What I like best about university is the freedom to make choices and the freedom to fail. It's an adventure to try new things and learn from my failures.

>Learning to prioitize my time was probably the most difficult adjustment for me in university. I would always leave things to the last minute because I didn't know how to put things in priority. As a result, whatever deadline came first, I would
do that project first.

But this way of doing things is not the best use of my time, talents or resources. I was following the timeline imposed onto me instead of making my own timeline that would take advantage of my skills and talents.

>In university, my personality has changed and the way I do things became solidified. My beliefs and faith became defined. As the years went on, my focus in university changed from how I can get the best career to how to live a life for God. I learned was that I can't achieve things on my own strength. That strength has to be from God.

The kind of person that I am:

>When nobody is watching, I am the quietest and most introverted person in the world, which many of my friends would find a hard time believing.

>To me, just being myself means withdrawing to my favorite chair and doing some reading.

I am an introvert and in my line of education, you can't be an introvert. In the commerce world, you need to network and be a people person. As a result, socializing and networking really drained me. Deep inside, I just want to curl up in my sofa and read a good book.

>I'd hate to be without my computer and my books (I sound like a geek, don't I?!)

>I'm most proud of winning first place in a martial arts competition.

>Describe my room? It's multi functional.

>Spare time? What spare time? When I do find some of that rare kind of time, you'll find me doing sports, reading, playing video games, cleaning my house... I particularly enjoy basketball, tennis, racquetball, Ultimate frisbee

>I like alternative rock, hard rock, movie soundtracks.
