Drema's Thoughts on University

advice  |  being in first year  |  my major  |  more about me

Three tips

1. Life is always going to be hard. First year was especially tough for me. But don't give up because the lessons you go through will reap benefits and will make you grow.

2. Meet people! Develop meaningful relationships. You may not remember what you've studied in a course, but friendships last.

3. Study hard and play hard! Try out new things that you've always wanted to. Do well and have fun!

Life in First Year

I remember feeling in my first year how drastically different university was from high school! I felt so overwhelmed by the work load. I love the material I study, but I can't finish all my readings!

It's a constant challenge to balance everything. Also, it's hard to stay motivated to work hard in university because your professors don't push you the same way high school teachers do.

You have a lot more freedom in university; but with that freedom comes more responsibility.

The best part of university is meeting different kinds of people. Developing relationships with people is my priority at university because although I may not remember what I learned in class, I will always remember the people I meet.

Chosing a major

I've always had difficulty figuring out what I want to do with my life and what to do in the future. I knew I wanted to work with people but was never really sure what. So I began in the faculty of agricultural sciences thinking of becoming a dietetic and helping people with their health.

What I was studying was interesting but I think I wanted to work with people more on a relational basis. After 2 years, I switched into Arts pursuing a degree in family studies where I learn about the development and interaction between people. Sometimes I feel that I can never be sure but I would not know unless I try different things!

Things I love to do

Summertime or just sunny days and blue skies makes me excited! I love the outdoors. Going biking, swimming, playing Frisbee, canoeing and hanging out with friends.

Music was one of those slow-to-warm up things for me. I used to hate all the practicing, recitals and exams. Yet somehow some of the things I enjoy doing most are singing, playing the piano and the guitar.

When I first learned how to drive, I was so tense and scared.
It seemed such a difficult thing to do - I didn't think I'd ever achieve it. Maybe that's why I delayed taking my driving tests.

But now, oh, do I love driving or what? Especially down a highway - with windows rolled down - it's exciting and very freeing. I guess it's so freeing because I can see all that's out there and the world. Now that I've discovered that the world isn't just about me.
