Dorrie's Story

questions  |  finding an answer  |  safety  |  the Truth

The Big Question

>I grew up going to church every Sunday with my parents. We went to a German traditional church.

>Most weeks, I didn't think much about what was going to happen at church, but this Sunday I was full of anticipation and excitement.

>The pastor was going to answer the question that I was interested in: What do you do when things in your life go all wrong?

>I was very excited to hear what the anwer to this question would be. The pastor spoke first in German and then.. finally, started talking in English.

What could wrong

>The pastor was a kind man with horn-rimmed glasses and a ring of hair around his head. He spoke about the uncertainty of our lives here on earth.

>He talked about losing friends and family to death and disease - I felt anxious as I thought of losing my family.

>He talked about the uncertainty of the weather - crops that could fail due to drought or hail - I felt anxious again as I thought about my father who was a farmer.

>What would I do if things went wrong?

Is there an answer?

>Finally, the pastor told us about one thing that never changes - never goes wrong...

>It was Jesus Christ. He is the same today as he was yesterday and will be exactly the same tommorrow.

>I knew that I wanted a friend like Jesus to be with me through everything in my life that could go wrong. I closed my eyes so I could focus and I bowed my head and prayed.

>I asked Jesus to forgive me for the things in my life that I had done that were sinful - disobedience to my parents, hurting my brother, my selfishness...

>I knew from that moment on that I had an everlasting friend, who would be there at every turn - not just when things went wrong.

Now I feel safe

>I still feel safe. Jesus has been there with me through many tough times and good times.

>I felt his comfort and peace when my dad died - I was 18 years old.

>I knew he was with me through all the stresses of university - the exams, the failures, the relationship strains.

>"The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on himin truth" (Psalm 145:18).

>"Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall" (Psalm 55:22)

>"And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus' (Philippians 4:7)

>Jesus said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you" (Hebrews 13:5)
