Student Profile: Dilys Speaks on University and Life

Choosing my area of study:

>I decided to major in Religious Studies because it gives me the opportunity to connect with a wide range of people on the issue of spirituality. Before deciding on my specialty, I'd been able to talk about spiritual issues with several of my friends individually. I found our talks stimulating and fun!

>Religious Studies is a small department and it has the most amazing profs! Its size allows students like me to get to know my instructors pretty well, which I love.

>It's impossible not to be challenged in your faith in this field. The hardest thing is not so much being challenged by your prof's lectures but in being patient and persistent with your own research, not relying simply on one source.
>Advice for first year students: Be an independent and critical thinker; don't assume your instructor knows everything; ask lots of questions and be interested!

My life in university:

>The best part about university is the opportunity for exploration and discovery. You learn a lot about yourself and about people in general. You meet so many unique individuals who challenge your worldview either in the classroom or one-on-one, and vice versa.

>In my first two years of university, it was a challenge for me to take the initiative in building rapport with my classmates. I also tried new things for me like swimming, going to the gym, and enjoying concerts.

>I thrive on being independent, making my own decisions, and being pushed to grow relationally, spiritually, and intellectually. I'm a big picture enthusiast.

The kind of person that I am:

>When no one's around, I'm quiet, introspective, and a bit too serious about everything. I probably think too much!

>Just being myself means not having to perform to people's expectations, being content and comfortable in my own skin, liking the person I've been created to be.
>My dream is to learn to cook well enough that I don't need to follow recipes religiously. I hope to one day create an inviting, warm, and sunny place -- my home.

>I'd hate to be without my agenda! Everything's in there -- phone numbers, 'to-do' lists, uplifting reminders. And I couldn't live without Post-It notes either (love it!).

>My room is really neat -- everything folded or tucked in, books placed on the shelf, pens in their place. I'm by nature a control freak. Plus, messiness makes me cranky. In fact, the state of my room sometimes affects my own state of mind, which can be a bad thing.

>Food I would consider dying for: a really yummy laksa (Southeast Asian spicy noodle dish).
>My mom and dad have definitely played a huge part in how I see my world and what worth I place in areas of life like school and spirituality. Because of them, I've come to value things like integrity, honesty, responsibility, diligence, and family (very Confucian ideals!).

>The greatest thing someone has ever done for me is love me -- without expecting anything in return or manipulating me to react likewise.
