College Living: The Art of Slowing Down to Enjoy Life

by Tyrone Warner

Our world appears to be moving faster and faster everyday. Life will pass us by if we let it, so we need to slow down and experience the world around us.

Getting outside is one of the best ways to 'slow down' and get exercise. Take something you enjoy doing and explore it in detail. Things become much more meaningful and complex the deeper you look into them.

One of my favourite activities is throwing the frisbee around. You can do it anywhere, with anyone at just about any skill level and enjoy it. It can be intense, or it can be peaceful and relaxing. Because engaging in this activity requires another person to be around, this is a good choice when you want to slow down and enjoy the pleasures of good company.

Listen to slower, quieter music. The point of 'slowing down' is to take your focus away from the 'busy' and 'distracting' life, and to place yourself in a more peaceful state. When listening to 'restful' music, be sure to:

  • Listen to every sound made. Why are those sounds there? How does it make you feel?
  • Imagine a new environment. What kind of place does the music take you to? Can you visualize it in your mind? How does that place make you feel?
  • Why are you listening? Try to figure out why you like the music you are listening to. If you dislike it, try to understand your dislike as well.

Meditate. Many people attempt to find peace and comfort by clearing their minds and finding peace inside themselves. Others believe that meditation is a form of communicating with God.

If prayer is a way for an individual to talk to God, then meditation can be understood as an act of listening to God. Those people who explore a personal relationship with God often find peace and tranquility in their lives.

Tyrone loves his music slow and quiet, but also longs for the loud and abrasive. He loves finding out about new artists and albums and will even point you in the direction of some good tunes.
