Tips on Getting into Med School

by Dr. J. Schmiley

Getting into med school is a harrowing rite of passage.

There are no shortcuts in this process, but to give yourself any hope of entering medicine's "forbidden city" you must be prepared.

Behold the 8 Ps of Pre-med Preparation:

  • Prerequisites: Be aware of required courses, major in Sciences with Arts electives.

  • Performance: Grades do count so work hard...

  • Play: Don't drive yourself insane with work and be sure to reward yourself with playtime.

  • Priorities: Keep/get a life outside of school. Don't neglect your love for sports, music, friends and family.

  • Pass the MCAT: Prepare by excelling in your basic science courses.

  • Presentation (Interviews): Be on time, dress conservatively and leave the nose ring at home. Brush you teeth. Have a few intelligent questions to ask about the med school curriculum or program.

  • Perseverance: Most doctors didn't get into med school on their first try. Don't give up.

  • Perspective: The things that get you into med school are not the things that will make you a great doctor--those things are yours to discover along the way.
